Dragon Linocut Printmaking Workshop at The Art House for St George’s Day, Thursday 24th April, 7-9.30pm

Be inspired by Dragons from around the world to create a unique linocut print. Book your place now!

You will be given an introduction to lino cutting by artist Caroline Misselbrook and look at examples of how contemporary artists have used this technique.

Dragons and St George’s day has a rather dark history (for the dragon, at least!) – it is thought that the dragon is used as a symbol for indigenous faiths which were replaced by Christianity.

We’d like to bring people together in a creative way for this workshop, to celebrate that noble beast, the Dragon, and the many cultures which use this symbol around the world.

After completing a range of exercises to develop your skills with the lino cutter you will create a final design from which to print. All materials and tools are included.

Caroline Misselbrook loves to create artwork as a way to gain a better understanding of where we come from, engage with the natural world and appreciate the wonders of our universe. She uses a variety of methods and materials including laser cutting, print making, paper cutting, textiles and book works.

Linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum – although nowadays we use other materials, too – is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric by hand.

This workshop is funded by the Southampton City Council Community Chest fund.
